1. Introduction

In the field of biometrics, palmprint is a novel but promising member. Most discriminating patterns of palmprint could be captured by low resolution capture devices, such as a low-cost CCD camera. Large region of palm supplies stable line patterns which are difficult to be faked. Research on palmprint image analysis has achieved great progress since the last decade.

CASIA Palmprint Image Database V1.0 (or CASIA-PalmprintV1 for short) is released in order to promote research and progress on palmprint recognition algorithms.

2. Brief Descriptions of the Database

CASIA Palmprint Database contains 5239 palmprint images captured from 301 different people. All palmprint images are 8 bit gray-level JPEG files collected in same time with our self-developed palmprint recognition device (Fig.1a). We also develop fast palmprint recognition system working on PDA and common PCs using CMOS web cameras (Fig.1b).

In our device, there are no pegs to restrict postures and positions of palms. Subjects are required to put his palm into the device and lay it on a uniform-colored background. The device supplies an evenly distributed illumination and captures palmprint images using a CMOS camera fixed on the top of the device. Six typical palmprint images in the database are shown in Fig.2

3. Image Formats and Download Instructions

The images of the database are stored as:

XXXX\XXXX_(m/f)_(l/r)_XX.jpg

XXXX: the unique identifier of people, ranges from 0000 to 0301.

(m/f): the subject's gender,'m'denotes male and 'f'denotes female.

(l/r): the type of palm, ‘l' denotes left palm and ‘r' denotes right palm

XX: the index of image with the same type of palm,ranges from 1 to 8 (or 1 to 10) mostly.

XXXX_m_l_Y.jpg means the Yth palmprint image taken from left palm of XXXX who is male.

Researchers requesting this database should follow the following steps:

  • Download the application form
  • Fill an application form.
  • Send the form via email to casia_palm@nlpr.ia.ac.cn .
  • Check your email to find a login account and a password of our website after one day, if your application has been approved.
  • Download the CASIA Palmprint Image Database from our website with the authorized account within 48 hours.

The database is released for research and educational purposes. We hold no liability for any undesirable consequences of using the database. All rights of the CASIA database are reserved. Any person or organization is not permitted to distribute, publish, copy, or disseminate this database. In all documents and papers that report experimental results based on this database, our efforts in constructing the database should be acknowledged as: “ Portions of the research in this paper use the CASIA-PalmprintV1 collected by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Automation (CASIA) ” and a reference to "CASIA-PalmprintV1, http://www.cbsr.ia.ac.cn/PalmDatabase.htm" should be included. A copy of all reports and papers that are for public or general release that use the CASIA-PalmprintV1 should be forwarded upon release or publication to
